Michael F. Massey
1958 – 2011
WESTFIELD – Michael F. Massey, 52, of Ridgecrest Drive died Thursday at home surrounded by his loving family and friends. Mike was born in Springfield the son of the late John and Helen (Shea) Massey. He grew up and attended schools in West Springfield before moving to Westfield with his family in 2001. Before his medical retirement, he was employed as a Food Service Supervisor for the Connecticut Department of Corrections. Previously he was employed at Northeast Utilities and was also head chef at local restaurants, including the Windmill Restaurant. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Church and member of AFSME. Mike volunteered with the Westfield Schools, Special Olympics and served as a coach and umpire for the Westfield Little League. However, Mike's true passion was cooking for family and friends. Anyone who had the pleasure of tasting his cooking quickly realized he had mastered the art. Mike loved gathering with family, friends, and neighbors to watch the kids enjoy his cooking. Mike enjoyed many vacations he took with family and friends. His passion was fishing and watching the Yankees and the Vikings, but his most favorite times were spent watching his son play baseball. He instilled into him "to have fun and laugh every day, even when faced with challenges". Mike fought a tough battle but managed to put those around him at ease, with his wit and smile, until the end. Mike leaves his loving wife of 26 years, Cheryl (Labbe) Massey, his devoted son, Griffen Michael Massey, two sisters Virginia Massey and her husband Rudolph Haagsma of Longmeadow and Patricia Versailles of Barnwell, S.C. and his best beagle, Coco Clara. He also leaves aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many friends who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by a nephew Joseph Labbe in 2000 and a brother-in-law Ronald Versailles in 2007. The family has requested that you meet them at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Church, Westfield Wednesday at 10:00am for the Liturgy of Christian Burial. Visiting hours will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Tuesday 4:00 – 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Noble Visiting Nurse and Hospice, 77 Mill Street, Westfield, MA 01085.
