Obituary

Monica (Donnelly) Butler

6/18/34 – 8/21/23

West Springfield – Monica D. (Donnelly) Butler, 89, died peacefully Monday afternoon surrounded by her loving family.  Monica was born in Brooklyn, NY and lived in West Springfield most of her life.

She was a 1951 graduate of the former Cathedral High School and worked at AT&T. A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

We are broken hearted at the loss of our dear mother, aka 'Grandma Butler'. She was one of a kind. Sharp as a tack, with a wit to match.

Her husband John P. Butler died in 2019.  She leaves four children, Patrick Butler (Melanie), Paul Butler (Mary), Monica Butler (John Peterson) and Mary Fitzsimmons (Mark), fifteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and her daughter-in-law Michelle Butler.  Besides her husband, Monica was predeceased by two sons, John and Michael and her brother Hugh Donnelly.

The most important thing to Monica was her family. She loved watching them play soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball. Her favorite teams were the Red Sox and Notre Dame women's basketball. She loved watching March Madness with Mary and Monica. She was even known to bet on a game or two, including last year's National Championship game!

She loved time on the Cape with family, by the Ocean and a good book.

Monica also very much enjoyed her time on Wednesdays at the W Springfield Senior Center, playing Bingo. She would say 'I have such a great table. Everyone is so nice.'  She also loved watching Jeopardy, and rarely missed an episode.

As a founding member of PLPV (Pro-Life of Pioneer Valley), she worked tirelessly to protect the unborn, while forming lifelong friendships along the way.

The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Friday at 9:00am with Liturgy in St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 10:00am followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4:00 – 7:00pm.  For online condolences please visit curranjones.com.
