Morgan F. O'Connell

Moriches, NY – Morgan F. O'Connell, 94, died Thursday, April 14, 2011 in Westfield, MA. Morgan was born in New York City, the son of the late Martin and Beatrice O'Connell. A lifelong athlete, Morgan signed a minor league baseball contract in 1936; he played for three years in various East Coast leagues. He became a New York City Police Office in 1939 and in 1940 became a member of the New York Fire Department. He enlisted in the United States Marines Corps following Pearl Harbor and served in the Canal Zone from 1942 until 1945. Upon discharge, Morgan resumed his duties with the NYC Fire Department. He was promoted to Lieutenant in charge of nightclubs, racetracks, and entertainment facilities. Following his retirement Morgan enjoyed golf, bowling, and pool. He was predeceased by his second wife Eleanor (Riegelsperger) O'Connell, and two sons Michael J. and Kevin O'Connell. He leaves two sons Morgan P. O'Connell and his wife Eleanor of Wantagh, NY and Atty. Martin O'Connell and his wife Mary of Westfield, MA; a daughter Colleen Forbes and her husband Glenn of Nesconset, NY; three sisters Eleanor Murphy, Sr. Anna O'Connell and Peggy Phelan; and his former spouse Mary Regan O'Connell. He also leaves nine grandchildren and two great granddaughters. In addition, he was predeceased by his two brothers John and William O'Connell. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family and the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling all arrangements. For online condolences please visit curranjones.com.
