Phyllis Demetria
Sabourin Martin
November 17, 1930 – August 22, 2021
WEST SPRINGFIELD - Phyllis Demetria (Cristofori) Sabourin Martin, 90, entered eternal rest on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Baystate Medical Center after a short illness. Phyllis was born in Plymouth, MA, to the late Caesar and Albonea (Gambini) Cristofori. For most of her life, she lived in West Springfield and was a 1948 graduate of West Springfield High School. She worked in retail for many years at Hallmark, Steiger's, and Bradlees before retiring to her true passion as an expert seamstress. She could create just about anything with a remnant of cloth, a needle, thread, or a sewing machine. Working from her home afforded her the flexibility to dig in her garden, tend to her loving cats, Gatto and Yatehe, and see her loved ones. She loved being outside and cared deeply for her family, visiting with her mother and sister daily during their elder years. Simple things in life brought her great joy. Phyllis "Morning Bird" was an active member of the Southern New England Abenaki Tribe with her late husband Philip "Gray Fox'' Martin, a devoted member of Mittineague Congregational Church, and a communicant of the former St. Ann Church. She was predeceased by her former husband, Everett Sabourin, her son, John Sabourin, two brothers, C. Joseph Cristofori, Harvey Cristofori, and a sister, Vivian Denehy. She is survived by a son and his wife David and Cory Sabourin, a daughter and her husband Cynthia and Larry Sullivan, a daughter-in-law Yvonne (Meeh Sabourin) Perry, six grandchildren Kristine, Kathryn, Ian, Shelli, Larry Jr., Rachel, nine great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The funeral will be on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at 7 pm at the West Springfield Curran Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street. Calling hours will precede the service on Thursday from 4-7 pm. The burial will be private in St. Joseph Cemetery in Plymouth, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Meals on Wheels, c/o West Springfield Council on Aging, 128 Park Road, West Springfield, MA 01089.
