Prim Hertel

Holyoke – Prim Hertel, 90, formerly Springfield died Wednesday at the Soldier's Home in Holyoke. Born and raised in Springfield, Illinois, he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served from 1943-1946 as a Navy Corps Man attached to marine unit in the South Pacific. After being injured while on duty he spent a year in the Pearl Harbor Hospital. After recovering from his injuries, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served 17 years retiring in 1968. After retirement he worked in the Maintenance Depart of the Westover Developmental Corporation. His wife of 36 years Gail P. (Schauer) Hertel died in 2005. He leaves three children Krista Chase and her husband Brian of Somers, Sandra Blazer and Stephen Hertel both of Ohio; his two beloved grandchildren Harrison and Emma Chase; a sister-in-law Marlene Yacovone Buendo and her husband Carlo; nephew Greg Yacovone and his wife Patricia and nieces Susan Manzi and her husband Frank, Lisa Gandelli and her husband Tony and Lori Yacovone. The committal service will be held at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery Friday at 2:00pm. The West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling all arrangements.
