Obituary

Raymond A. Yvon, 85, of West Springfield passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Bear Mountain of West Springfield.  Ray was born in Springfield, MA on July 6, 1936, the son of the late Alfred and Margaret (Mullaney) Yvon.  He grew up in Chicopee, Chicopee where he attended Holy Name School and graduated from Cathedral High School before moving to West Springfield. After graduating High School, Ray proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean War from 1954 until he was honorably discharged in 1958.  Upon his return, he worked for A.G. Spaulding Co., Western Union, and received his license to be an oil burner technician. He then went on to receive his Associate in Science Degree in Law Enforcement from Holyoke Community College and then his Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement at Western New England College.  He proudly served as a West Springfield Police Officer for 30 years before retiring in 1997 as the head of the Juvenile Bureau.  He was President of the Massachusetts Juvenile Police Offers Association from 1988-1989 and served on its Board of Directors.  He was a member of the West Springfield Police Relief Association and the Massachusetts Police Association.  In 1993, he received the Roland Kinlock award, the highest award of the Massachusetts Juvenile Police Officers Association. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and spending summers at Ashmere Lake in Hinsdale, MA.  He enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Patriots and spending time with his family who he adored. He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Ray is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Stella (Juchno) Yvon.  He also leaves behind his daughter Lynn Yvon of West Springfield; his son Ronald and Daughter-In-Law Lisa Yvon of West Springfield; four grandchildren who he deeply cherished, Chelsea Goodreau and her husband Kyle, John Fontaine, Jr.; Nicholas Yvon and Sarah Fontaine.  He was a caring brother of Richard Yvon of West Springfield and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews, as well as many extended family members and friends.  He was pre-deceased by his daughters Laurie Yvon, Margaret Yvon, Cindy Fontaine and his brother Robert Yvon. Ray's family would like to thank all the staff at Bear Mountain for the kind care they provided to him during the last two years. The funeral will be Thursday at 9am from the West Springfield Curran Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, with a Mass at 10 at St. Thomas Church. The burial with military honors will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, from 4-7pm.
