Richard W. Adams

1926 – 2017

Richard W. Adams, 90, of South Hadley went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 5 , 2017. He was born and raised in the Forest Park section of Springfield, MA prior to moving to South Hadley. He was the son of the late Robert C. Adams and Christine (Conery) Adams. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his beloved brother Donald who died in action during WW2.  His adored wife of 57 years Ann (Moynahan) Adams died in 2003. They were true soulmates enjoying the pleasures of family and traveling. She was the absolute love of his life. He was a graduate of South Hadley High School; was among the first graduating class of Holyoke Community College and received his Bachelor's Degree from Nichols College.  He served in the United States Navy during WW2. He was the Vice President of Hampden Papers Incorporated where he worked for over 40 years before retiring in 1990. Richard was well known in the community through his volunteer work, delivering cheer to all he encountered.  He was a longtime member of the Holyoke chapter of the Y.M.C.A. where he could be found playing racquetball daily.  He was also a member of the V.F.W.  In his earlier days he enjoyed being involved with hydroplane boat racing where he helped pioneered the sport locally on the Connecticut River. After pursuing a lifelong desire to fly, he obtained his private pilot's license. He is survived by his devoted children Donald Adams and his wife Kathleen, Susan O'Toole and her husband Patrick, David Adams, Robert Adams and his wife Brenda. He also leaves his eleven precious grandchildren, seventeen joyous great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
