1925 – 2012

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Richard F. Nims, 86 of Falmouth Road passed away Saturday at Wingate Nursing Home at Hampden. Richard was born in Springfield and lived in West Springfield most of his life. He was educated in Springfield public schools, AIC, and the University of Vermont, graduating in 1949. Richard was the sole owner and operator of the family business, B.D. Nims Lumber Company, since the deaths of his brothers Brainerd A. and Edward D. Nims. The business, located at 253 Baldwin Street, was founded by his father Brainerd D. Nims in 1917 and sold in 1998. Richard was a United States Navy Veteran, trained as a fighter pilot during World War II. He leaves his wife of 65 years, Lois Arnold Nims; daughter Erica C. Glasser, husband Mike, and children Isaak and Maya of Cumberland, Maryland; son Jason R. Nims, wife Maria, and children Theodore and Lucas of Portland, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Throughout his life Richard loved the outdoors and nature, often hiking, canoeing, and skiing with the family. Richard was a member of the Nims Family Association and had a great interest in the family history in Old Deerfield, MA. A graveside service for the family will be held in Hillcrest Park Cemetery. Friends and business acquaintances are invited to a reception at Storrowton Tavern Thursday, May 17, 3-5PM. The West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home is handling all arrangements.
