Shirley G.
Wands
May 31, 1924 – January 24, 2021
Shirley Gene (Matteson) Wands, (96), a long-time resident of the Springfield area, was safely called home on January 24, 2021 , surrounded by her loving family. Born May 31,1924 in Agawam to John and Mable Matteson, at the Captain Charles Leonard House, Shirley graduated from the Agawam Public School System in 1942. A bright and enthusiastic student, she found herself drawn to a career as an accountant, where she excelled. Shirley was a highly sought-after employee who eagerly supported local firms in the manufacturing, construction, transportation, telecommunications, and medical industries. After an extensive career in the Springfield area, Shirley relocated to central Florida in 1993, with her daughter Janice and son-in-law John for twenty-two years. While in Florida, she worked at PUBLIX grocers in the accounting and customer service areas until her ultimate retirement in 2000. She relocated to West Springfield, MA, in 2015 to be closer to her sister Ruth. A fun-loving and gregarious soul, she was accomplished in artistic roller skating, she spent endless hours at the Riverside Park Skating Rink working and dancing with friends and family. Shirley also loved music, played the organ, and sang at religious services for her Congregation regularly. Possessing a smile that could light up any room, her playful outlook toward life left many treasured memories. She will be sorely missed by her adoring family and lifelong friends, including Joyce Platt, Mickey, and Charlie Crouch. She is survived by her four children: Michele Place, Janice Barnette and John, Laurie Howie and Keith, and Lee Wands and Jennifer. Her sister Ruth (Matteson) Brennan and children Dale Brennan, Susan Brennan, Pamela Mariarossi and Gary, Sally Carlson and Richard, Nancy Mathis and David, Kimberly Brennan, Heather Brennan, and Andrew Brennan and Jeannette. Shirley requested no services be held in her honor. The Curran-Jones Funeral Home of West Springfield, MA, has been entrusted with the internment arrangements at Paucatuck Cemetery, West Springfield, MA, where she will blissfully reside with her parents and other relatives. Ruth and the family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the care providers at the Western Massachusetts Hospital for their supreme kindness and consideration.
