1918 – 2011

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Speros G. Perakis, 93, of Monastery Avenue died Wednesday surrounded by his loving family at home. He was born, November 2, 1918, in Langatha, Crete, Greece. He was son of the late George and Rubini (Kiritsakis) Perakis. He served in the Greek Army during World War II and came to the United States in 1952, working as a machinist for Moore Drop Forge Company until his retirement in 1993. Speros was a faithful and active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, where he was a member of its Over 60 Senior Citizens Club, active with GLENDI and belonged to the Cretan Club, which he loved going to. Speros enjoyed spending time in his garden and was always sharing his fruits and vegetables with family and friends. He loved his family and taught his children as well as his grandchildren, respect and love of family. He leaves his wife of 53 years Antonia (Sergentanis) Perakis; a son Steven S. and his wife Mary of West Springfield; two daughters Ruby Perakis of West Springfield and Ellen Perakis Cunha and her husband Carlos of Haverhill; and three grandchildren Jonathan, Speros and Antonia. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, which he loved like they were his own, his extended family and friends in Greece and America. Speros was predeceased by his sister Eva Sergentanis, who passed away last week and brothers John and Stellios of Greece. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 12, 2011 on the observance of his name day "St. Spyridon". He will lie in State from 10:00 – 11:00am at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral followed by a funeral service at 11:00am. The burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Sunday from 3:00 – 7:00pm. For online condolences please visit curranjones.com.
