Theodore "Ted" Athens
March 4, 1922 - October 7, 2018
Theodore Athens, age 96, died peacefully in his residence, on Sunday, October 7, 2018; surrounded by the care and comfort of family and friends. Those that knew and loved him called him "Hun," "Ted," "Dad," "Papou," "Papouli," or "Teddy." Having been referred to as a "man of faith" and a "family man," Ted is known for his devotion, gentleness, and deep concern for others. He defended his country during World War II by serving as a Combat Engineer and Military Police Officer, attaining the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army. He went on to become an accountant for Baker Chocolates and the American Built-Rite Company in Boston before starting his own business. Despite everything he did, Ted is best defined by the people he loved, who loved him; and by his Savior, Jesus Christ. Born and raised in the greater Boston area, Ted retired in Mount Dora, Florida; where he was a member of the local Seventh-day Adventist Church, before moving back up to Massachusetts in 2016. Ted is survived by his wife of 68 years, Christine Athens; son George and his wife Janet; daughter Elaine and her husband James. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren: Anthony and his wife Erin; Christopher and his wife Katherine; Carolyn; James; Michael; Andrea; Lauren; Brian and his wife Meredith; and seven great-grandchildren; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 12:30 PM Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at the Agawam Curran-Jones Funeral Home with burial in the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. A calling hour will precede the service on Wednesday, from 11:30AM - 12:30PM. For location information, please visit curranjones.com
