West Springfield-Thomas Bienia, 60, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at Baystate Medical Center. Tom was born the son of the late Barbara and Charles Bienia. Tom resided in West Springfield for the majority of his life. He was a 1971 graduate of West Springfield High School where he excelled in football, baseball and basketball. He attended Dartmouth College from 1971 to 1975, where he always boasted to have graduated in the top 95% of his class. Tom began a successful career in the trucking industry, and then became a small business owner with his brother Rich. Tom was very active in the West Springfield community, including former president of the West Springfield Lions Club and contributing to the youth sports programs. As Uncle Sam, he was also the unofficial parade marshal to the annual West Springfield Memorial Day Parade. Tom was a proud, faithful member of the "4 O'clock Club". Whether he was singing his favorite song, Rocky Raccoon, or dancing at any of the numerous events he attended, Tom always enjoyed life and making friends wherever he was. He is survived by his daughter Katelyn Finnegan and husband Michael Finnegan of Andover; daughter Allison Torres and husband Daniel Torres of Agawam; and son Mark Bienia of West Springfield. Tom also leaves behind his brother Richard Bienia and wife Linda Bienia of Agawam; brother Charles Bienia of West Springfield; his sister Kathryn Kowalczyk of West Springfield; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 am at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home. Calling hours are Wednesday 4-7 pm.
