Walter H.
Groll
May 2, 1933 – January 29, 2022
Our loving father and grandfather, Walter H. Groll of West Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the age of 88. After a long battle with cancer, Walter died peacefully with his loving family by his side. He was a true warrior right until the end. Walter was married to the love of his life, Elizabeth Sonsini, of West Springfield for 55 beautiful years. Walter was born in Springfield on May 2, 1933, to the late Frank and Gertrud Groll. The youngest of two sons, he enjoyed growing up on David Street on Hungry Hill in Springfield. He especially loved getting into mischief with his brother, Fred Groll, and closest friends at Van Horn Park. He was a 1951 graduate of Technical High School and then served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He went on to work at Van Norman Machine Company and as a master electrician for Turner Electric and Sullivan Electric. He was a proud member of IBEW Local #7 and served on it's Executive Board. Walter was the youngest in its' history and a lifelong member of the Springfield Turnverein, where he served on several committees. This was a special place in his heart where he met his soulmate and sang in its' men's choir with family and friends. There are no words to express the sentimental value the Turnverein held for him. He also enjoyed times spent as a member of the Dante Club. He leaves his three loving daughters, Lisa Groll, Tina DePergola, and her husband Frank, Susan Groll, and fiancé Mark Provost. Walter was a loving grandfather to Christopher Groll, and Francesca and Giovanni DePergola. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and his faithful companion, Schatzy. Besides his wife and parents, Walter was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Frederick and Marlyn Groll. Walter was an avid sports fan, whether attending his children and grandchildren's games or watching the major leagues, especially New England sports. He loved nothing more than being surrounded by his large extended family and spending time at his second home at Old Lyme, Connecticut, working on the house with his free union laborers, Mark and Mark. His favorite hobbies included having political debates, working on projects around both houses, and sharing stories that meant the most to him. He was adventuring until his last months' kayaking for the first time at Wells Maine with Susan and Mark's family, taking weekend trips to Vermont, and having one last swim at Sound View Beach with his grandson Giovanni. Visiting hours will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Wednesday from 4-7 pm. Family and friends are invited to the Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church Thursday at 11:00 am. His burial will follow in St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery.
