Obituary

Walter J. Keane

1954 – 2024

West Suffield – Walter J. Keane, 69, passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening with his wife by his side. Wally was born in Springfield, son of the late Thomas and Joan (Wodyka) Keane. He grew up in Springfield and spent time in PA and Maryland before settling in Longmeadow, later Westfield, and most recently West Suffield, CT. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School where he excelled famously on the basketball court and baseball fields before later receiving his degree from Western New England College. Later in life, he developed a passion for gardening, was a self-proclaimed foodie, loved Christmas, and always enjoyed sharing a cocktail on the back deck with his wife and dog by his side. Wally was an avid New England Sports fan, especially the Bruins. He was the ultimate handyman, always finding a way to fix things no matter the challenge. Wally enjoyed cooking elaborate dinners, creating new dessert dishes and had a passion for peanut butter and late-night cookies. He loved to laugh, share boisterous stories, tell slightly inappropriate jokes, give big hugs, and complain about how slowly the Happy Birthday song was sung. Family was the most important thing to Wally, he loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and host gatherings at his home with his beloved wife. He leaves the love of his life and best friend Debra A. Merriam of 18 years; four children, Brian and his wife Laura, Sean, Tyler and his wife Emily and Kelly Keane; seven grandchildren, Griffin, Mackenzie, Colin, Cameron, Riley, Chloe, and George. He also leaves his dear stepchildren, who he considered his daughters, Juli and Sam Thibault, a brother Thomas Keane, a sister Bonnie Gates and several nieces and nephews. Wally was larger than life; we will miss his big personality and smile forever. In lieu of flowers, please give someone a hug and toast to Wally with his famous nightcap, a Black Russian. Visiting hours will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Friday, August 23rd from 4:00 – 7:00pm. Family and friends are invited to meet at Sacred Heart Church, Chestnut Street, Springfield on Saturday at 10:00am for the funeral Liturgy. For online condolences please visit curranjones.com.
