WEST SPRINGFIELD – Walter J. Piela, 89, of Morgan Road died Wednesday in Baystate Medical Center. Walter was born in Chicopee and has lived in West Springfield since 1947. He grew up in Chicopee, graduating from Chicopee High School before joining the United States Army. He served as a Staff Sergeant during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He started his career as a Toolmaker for the Springfield Armory. He worked at the Armory until 1968 and then went to work at UMASS retiring in 1986. He leaves his wife of 65 years Mary A. (Kostecky) Piela; two sons Walter and his wife Deborah of Deerfield and Joseph of Hardwick, VT; a daughter Maryellen Piela of Grafton, FL; a brother Al Piela of Chicopee; six grandchildren and a great granddaughter. The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Monday, March 21, 2011 at 9:30am with Liturgy in St. Stanislaus Basilica at 11:00am followed by burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
