Ward Henry Harlow, Jr. of West Springfield passed away on April 14, 2020. He was born in Westfield, MA on May 30, 1934. He is survived by his loving wife Lorraine Beverly (Saben) Harlow of 62 years and his daughters, Elizabeth Harlow-Harris (West Springfield, MA) and wife Christine; Lynn Chase (Scarborough, ME) and husband Arthur; and Sandra Glazier (Hadley, MA) and husband Todd. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Christina Miller and husband Jesse, Andrew Chase, Molly Glazier, Megan Glazier, Macenzie Harlow-Harris and Kayleigh Harlow-Harris. Ward is pre-deceased by his parents Ward Henry and Elizabeth Packard Harlow. Ward was a 1952 graduate of West Springfield High School and 1956 honors graduate of American International College where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. He earned his Master's in Education in 1963 from Westfield State College. He was also a lifetime member of Mittineague United Methodist Church (West Springfield UMC). Ward spent the beginning of his career as a 4 th grade teacher in Springfield, where he and Lorraine met. He loved his students and spent hours teaching them chess in addition to the standard curriculum. Ward was a Chess master and loved sharing his skills and expertise with others. In addition, Ward loved horseshoes and was often seen pitching double ringers in his backyard horseshoe pit. After years of teaching Ward went to work for National Blank Book (Dennison National) Paper Company and retired from there in 1988. After retirement, Ward and Lorraine traveled the coast of Maine exploring lighthouses and beaches. He loved the ocean! Ward loved his family and his pride and joy were his grandchildren. He loved keeping up with everyone's activities and knew (in advance) what was going on in his family's life. Ward is remembered for his gentle compassion and love of his family!
