West Springfield – William V. "Bill" Bonfitto, 96, died unexpectedly at his home on January 4, 2018.  He was born in West Springfield on February 28, 1921 to the late Vincent and Ersilia (Bellano) Bonfitto.  Bill lived in West Springfield his entire life and attended local schools.  A member of the Greatest Generation, he was a United States Army veteran of WWII, serving with the Army Corps of Engineers, stationed throughout the European Theater of Operations, and held the rank of T/4.  Bill worked as a de-burrer and polisher at several tool and die shops during his lifetime, starting with Perkins Machine and Tool, and finally retiring from Sanford Tool and Design.  Bill's passion in life was his family, they were always first and foremost in his thoughts and in his heart, and his love for them was shown in many ways.  They in turn loved him deeply, and know that it will be difficult being left behind in this world without him.  In addition to his parents.  Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife Joan (Moran) Bonfitto in 2001, after 52 years of marriage; his brothers Gabriel and Robert Bonfitto; his sister Dora Ghareeb; his son-in-law John Platosz; his sisters-in-law Nancy and Louise Bonfitto, and Mary Burritt; and special cousin Sylvia (Selena) Kubik.  Bill leaves his son William Bonfitto, Jr. and his wife Rita of West Springfield; his daughter Janet Platosz of Agawam; his grandchildren David Bonfitto and his wife Choummaly of Agawam, and Laura Farrell and her husband James of Newton; and his great-grandchildren Brian and Andrew Bonfitto, and Honora and Sean Farrell.  He also leaves his brother-in-law Frederick Burritt and several nieces and nephews.  Bill was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and then St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Church, both in West Springfield until their closings.  The funeral will be held at the West Springfield Curran-Jones Funeral Home Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 9:00am followed by Liturgy in St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 10:00am.  Burial will take place in St. Thomas Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00pm.  For more details please visit curranjones.com.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Springfield Rescue Mission, 10 Mill Street, Springfield, MA 01108.
