Obituary

William Lawrence Burgoyne, 73, of Westfield, MA passed away peacefully on Monday evening, 1/31/2022, after a long struggle with advanced dementia. William was born on 8/10/1948 in Springfield, MA, to Glenwood Lawrence Burgoyne, originally from Toronto, Canada, and Margaret Georgianna McBride Burgoyne, of Springfield MA. He was an older brother to his loving sister, Jody (deceased 2021) and brother, David. He lived his first six years of life in Springfield before the Burgoyne family moved to West Springfield. As a youngster, William was active in Boy Scouts, snow skiing at Mt. Tom, and water skiing in the Otis Ski Club, featured as a water ski jumper in the annual Club Ski Show. He played on the hockey team at West Springfield High School and raced his motorcycle in hill climbs at Mt. Tom. He cherished the time that he spent with his father as a young boy, helping to build their family lake house on Otis Reservoir in the Berkshires of MA, and spending summers on the lake with his family and friends. William majored in history at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. During college he obtained his pilot's license and worked on a horse farm. After graduating he spent time living in California and Cape Cod, before returning to western MA to work with his father to learn the trades of residential construction and general contracting. In his early thirties, William started his own company, William Burgoyne Construction, and built homes in the greater Springfield area for over twenty years. Throughout his entire life, William was a true adventurer, thriving in the great outdoors as a fisherman, a hunter, a skier, a skater, a swimmer, a diver, a boater, a body-surfer/boogie boarder, a gardener, and an avid golfer. As his daughters grew, he tried to teach them most of these skills, and a good many of them actually took! Over the years, William and his family enjoyed skiing at Stowe Mountain, swimming, boating and water skiing in Otis, boogie boarding off the coast of Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, deep-sea fishing for stripers and bluefish, gardening in the back yard of their home in Westfield, and occasionally successfully thwacking a ball at the driving range. William was also a talent with indoor skills and hobbies. He was known by friends and family as a talented chef, who took pride in creating lavish meals for guests and introducing people to delicacies like caviar & oysters, pate & foie gras, and his favorite, anything and everything lobster! He dabbled in art and painted with his girls. William proudly owned the Hofner Violin Bass Guitar, otherwise known as the "Beatles Bass", which he played to emulate his favorite Beatle, Paul McCartney. He was a man of science and vision and could build or create just about anything. He often helped Ali and Lauren in science fair projects and anything that required craftsmanship or artistic skills, which sometimes afforded them awards and prizes for art and science contests. William was a smart, talented, and generous man. He lived to provide for his family and gave them everything he possibly could. He was witty and daring. William was a man with a big heart who loved his family and friends mightily. William is survived by his older daughter Ali Huse, her husband Sean, and their three boys, Connor (12), Max (10), and Brody (8); his younger daughter Lauren Burgoyne, her fiancé Brian McGovern and their expected baby, due in July; and his brother David Burgoyne and his wife Donna May Burgoyne. Services will be held on Saturday, 2/5/2022 at the Curran-Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield. There will be a visitation hour, followed by the family's open invitation for visitors to share memories of William throughout his life. There will not be a church service, nor a burial.
