Obituary

William Proakis, 86, passed on Friday April 16, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family.  William was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, son of the late Constantine and Angela (Komastakis) Proakis.  William served in the U.S. Army and was a graduate of American International College.  He enjoyed going to all the Alumni games and was a devoted Red Sox fan. He worked as a Bank Manager locally for over 20 years. William was also a parishioner at the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield. He was Treasurer for the Church council and volunteered for Glendi until he was no longer able to do so. As a member of the church, he started and coached all the Athletic programs including basketball and baseball for the youth of St. George for many years. Coaching and sports were a major part of William's life and he was fondly remembered as "Coach Proakis".   Apart from his time with the church and coaching, William loved spending time with his family, which was most important to him.  William is predeceased by his wife Georgia (Christy), stepfather Andrew Poulos, two brothers: Peter and James Proakis, a sister Sarah Vavolakis and husband Tony, and his nephew James Vavolakis.  William leaves behind his son: Dean Proakis and wife Karen of Agawam, two daughters; Angela Forward and Fiance Tim Lang of Feeding Hills, and Christina Blake and husband Brendan of Feeding Hills, 4 Grandchildren, Jenna and Jason Forward, and Tanner and Tessa Blake, 3 nieces Adria Benard, Becky Mitchell, and Jen Christy, and 3 nephews Billy Christy, Costa Christy, and William Christy.  Family and Friends are invited to meet at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral for a funeral Mass at 11:30 am on Thursday.  Burial will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to the Springfield VA Clinic in West Springfield, 25 Bond Street Springfield, MA 01104 or to St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 22 St. George Rd.
